Dear Eli, I was so sorry to hear of the passing of your Dad. He and Al spent quit a time discussing war stories in the lobby of the hotel in Israel. He also happened to be in our synagogue when I recited my first Kaddish for Al and he came over to me, put his arm around my shoulder and joined me in the Kaddish.I will never forget that. My sincerest condolences to you, your Mom and your brothers.

I still remember Friday night services at Emanu-El and imitating him as I sat in my seat in the pews. I held my hand out as flat as he did when he recited the kiddush and held that huge goblet. Only I had no goblet. But I felt somehow that by pretending I did, I was entering a more holy place. He was a terrific chazzan with a beautiful voice and he was a pleasure to sing along with.
    Sending strength and love.

Sending my deepest condolences to the Perlman family. My friend and teacher Rabbi Rick has just introduced me to the music of Chazzan Dr. Perlmans devotion and beautiful davening. Although I was not privileged to meet Chazzan Perlman personally, his voice and kavana shall live with me all my days.

    Sending my prayers for comfort

Our sincerest condolences to the Perlman family on the passing of the very special Cantor Ivan Perlman, a great cantor, personal friend and mentor. When my wife and I first came to Providence, and sought out a temple for ourselves and our anticipated family, we were truly overwhelmed by the Cantor’s service, his outstanding and gifted voice, and his warmth. He immediately made us feel a part of the community. I had the privilege to treat him as one of my first patients in town. He always was quick with an answer and advice, and always with a sense of humor, to balance any of the serious talks we might have had. He was the Mohel for my son. He taught me how to blow the shofar, and it was a blessing for our family to have known him. He accomplished so much in his lifetime and will be sorely missed by all. Our warmest love and sympathies to his wife Muriel, and his talented and extraordinary sons, and the rest of his family through which he will live on. In fact our daughter and her family are now members of B’nai Israel in Maryland, where Cantor Josh Perlman is the Hazzan. We hope that wonderful memories help at this very sad time.

Ivan played a special role in my life most of you are not aware of. I was adopted as an infant and at the age of 52, 13 years ago, I started a search for my mother. After months of failure my search took me to Florida where I randomly contacted synagogues leaving messages. I was in serious despair. Ivan returned my call. He said he would “not rest until I found my mother”, Arlene Klein. Two days later at a men’s club meeting he asked if anyone know the Klein family and one man stood up and said I went to High school with Arlene. Another couple said they knew my grand parents they lived at the Village Royale in Boynton Beach. He was the key to finding my family. I published Not Remembered Never Forgotten and included two chapters for this wonderful man. He lives in my heart forever. Robert Allan Hafetz
