Kaplan, Lloyd S.
Kaplan, Lloyd S., 93, died Saturday, September 5, 2026 at Kent Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Sheila (Berger) Kaplan for 66 years. Born in Fall River, MA, a son of the late Abraham and Tillie (Siegel) Kaplan, he had lived in Warwick since 2009, previously living in Providence. He was a music teacher and professor at numerous schools, including Hugh B. Bain Jr. High School, Scituate Jr. & Sr. High Schools, Brown University Extension School, CCRI, Coastal Carolina University, Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, and University of RI. He never fully retired. Lloyd was a Korean Conflict Army veteran. The first music teacher to be recognized and inducted into the Rhode Island Music Hall of Fame, he devoted his life to music and his family.
Devoted father of Marjorie Seidenfeld and her husband, Mark, of New Rochelle, NY and Mitchell Kaplan and his wife, Eleanor, of Providence. Dear brother of the late Morton “Sonny” Kaplan, Rosalyn Jacobson, and Rita Stein. Loving grandfather of Noraa, Rebecca, Michael, Talia, and Jonah.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. in SHALOM MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 1100 New London Ave., Cranston. Shiva will be observed at his late residence, 11 Friar Tuck Rd., Wednesday and Thursday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., and Friday 10-12 noon. Shival will also be observed at 12 Saxon Way, New Rochelle, NY, Wednesday 7-9:30 p.m. and Thursday 1-4:30 and 6:30 – 9:30 p.m., and Friday 10:00 a.m.- 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the charity of your choice.

We are so sorry for your loss and it was an honor to have Lloyd in our life. Lloyd was a very special loving human being and was one of the most gracious, kind and positive person we knew. His courses, clarinet playing for so many groups, his famous Aristocats and swing playing for dance groups were legendary. He so loved his Sheila who was his rock and he always said she made his full life possible by doing so much behind the scenes. We so enjoyed our times together out at music events or dinners. He has left a beautiful legacy of lasting music education, music performance and it’s was always due to his great loving and lasting bond with Sheila. What a duo and we were made better by knowing him. Deep Condolences

My deepest condolences to all of Lloyd’s family. I knew Lloyd from CCRI, where I was a faculty member in the English Dept. I recall him fondly as an exceptionally nice, pleasant man who always offered a friendly smile and greeting every time we ran into each other on campus. Although I was more of a rock ‘n’ roll guy, I always enjoyed our conversations about music, and I was fascinated by his knowledge of jazz and the important musicians, well-known and lesser-known, of that genre. I shall keep Lloyd, and all of you, in my thoughts and prayers.

When I first met Uncle Lloyd and Aunt Sheila, I was immediately welcomed with love into the family. I will never forget the kindness and friendship of Uncle Lloyd and you Sheila.
Uncle Lloyd was an amazing man, what a musician, what a mensch.
My condolences to Sheila and Mitch: the world lost a wonderful person. I have not seen Lloyd in a while but he has been in my thoughts over the years. Lloyd was a caring and generous spirit. I always felt welcome when I talked to him. He always had a smile on his face and an interesting story to tell.

I was more than lucky to cover a music class at CCRI for a disabled student.
Mr. Kaplan was an excellent teacher.
He was my first baby-sitter and my music teacher, but more than that a loving, caring uncle. I feel fortunate to have had him in my life and will miss him.
