Joel R. Leonard

Leonard, Joel R., 44, of Narragansett, died peacefully on September 4, 2013.  Joel fought a long and courageous battle against diabetes and a rare form of heart disease.  His courage and tenacity was noted by all who saw him ride his trike through the streets of South County.  In June, 2013, he rode for over 40 miles in the Tour de Cure for Diabetes, raising over $4,000 for the American Diabetes Association.  Joel was a graduate of University of Lowell and did further study at Mass. College of Communications and New England Tech., receiving an associate degree from both.  Joel worked for ESPN and The Outdoor Life Network as a video editor.  He developed a lifelong passion for cycling and could always be seen pedaling on the roads of Fairfield and Westchester County.  After his transplants, he learned to use an adult trike, which he rode almost daily in the warm months.  Joel leaves his mother, Deborah Chorney, of Narragansett, his father, Dr. Charles F. Leonard, M.D., of Stoughton, MA, his sister, Alicia Brown (Jeff), his beloved nephew, Aaron, and beloved niece, Iris, plus many cousins and his aunt, Anita Chorney.  Funeral services at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, September 8, in the PRIEST CHAPEL, LINCOLN PARK CEMETERY, Warwick.  Shiva will be observed at his home in Narragansett, 35 Conanicus Rd., Sunday, 7-9 p.m., Monday and Tuesday 2-4 & 7-9 p.m.  Donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 146 Clifford St., Providence, RI 02903.  Arrangements by SHALOM MEMORIAL CHAPEL, Cranston.
