Brown, Fred

Fred M. Brown, 90 of Boynton Beach, Florida died peacefully on Saturday, September 6, 2025.  He was born in Providence, RI on September 10, 1934.  He was married for 68 years to Sandra (Castleman) and they had two children Jeffrey Brown (Nancy Engelhardt) of Needham, MA and Glenna Hornstein (Richard z”l) of Delray Beach, FL, whom he loved very much.  He was blessed with three grandchildren, Daniel DiPiero (Skyler Tucker), Beverly Strickland (Skylar) and Alina Brown.  Fred was excited to welcome his first great grandchild due in November.  He is also survived by his beloved sister and brother, Toby Smolokoff (Sheldon) and Phillip Brown (Ann). He was a beloved uncle to several nieces and nephews.  He was the son of the late Jack and Marion (Blumenthal) Brown.

Fred graduated from Hope High School in Providence, RI in 1952.  He attended Bryant College where he met his future wife Sandra.  He lived a very vibrant life full of passion for his performing in plays, his love for travel, his political beliefs, spending time at Narragansett Beach riding the waves and many other activities.  His biggest love was for his friends and family.  Fred was loyal to both and described by many as the ultimate “family” man.  He was the family patriarch for his siblings, cousins and his children and their families.

He worked 30 years for Gilbane Building Company as an accountant working on numerous construction projects in New England and Florida.

Upon retiring to Florida in 1997 he embraced retirement with his same passion as always.  He became an active member at Temple Beth Kodesh in Boynton Beach serving on the Board of Directors and two terms as President.  He continued to be active while acting in plays, continuing to work part time and eventually moving to Discovery Village in Boynton Beach two years ago where he made many new friends and became involved in community activities.

The family is grateful to Trustbridge Hospice in Boynton Beach, Florida where he spent the last days of his life.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Temple Beth Kodesh at 501 NE 26th Ave,  Boynton Beach, Florida 33435 .

A graveside funeral will be held on Thursday September 11 at  9:30am  EST at B’Nai Israel Cemetery, 1965 Mendon Road, Woonsocket, RI  02895.

So sorry to hear the sad news. My parents enjoyed being friends with Fred for many decades. They also enjoyed seeing him perform in shows. He was a very kind man. Thoughts and prayers to your family.

My Uncle Fred was a very special man.He always made sure that our family was up on all the doings. On a very personal note while I was having difficulties with my dad he shared how he had lost his dad and he told me that no matter how I felt or interpreted my dad’s behavior towards me ,he was still my father and I should react to him in a more constructive manner. That was probably the best advice a person has ever given me.It is very sad that my Uncle has past but those of us that knew him will never forget him.He was unique.

I just want to tell you how saddened I was to hear about cousin Fred’s passing. He was a lovely man and I always loved seeing him at family events. How special it was when he and your mom came to California for the first time for my wedding. He will be deeply missed. Sending all my love and prayers of comfort during this difficult time.

I’m remembering when we first met. It was 65 years ago. Ruthi and I were dating, and she said, I want you to meet my cousin Fred. We drove to Lowden Street in Pawtucket. You were sitting on the front steps with Jeffrey in your arms. 65 years ago, and many many memories and much love. Rest in peace my friend.
