Harold S. Webber

Dateline: WARWICK, RI

Webber, Harold S., 96, died Sunday, December 27, 2020 at Rhode Island Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Lorraine (Cramer) Webber of Warwick for 75 years, the devoted father of David Webber and his wife, Karen Jenkins, of Dobbs Ferry, NY, and Jeffrey Webber of Ardsley-on-Hudson, NY, the dear brother of Frances Weiss of Warwick, Marlene Fink of La Mirada, CA, Brenda Grosch of Portland, OR, and the late Marshall, Arnold, and Robert Webber, and the loving grandfather of Althea Webber, and her husband, Michael Gruen, and Jeremy Webber, and his wife, Jean Bingham.  He had 16 nieces and nephews.

Born in Providence, a son of the late Meyer and Rachel (Rubin) Webber, he was a lifelong Rhode Island resident.  He helped support his younger brothers and sisters during the Great Depression, joined the Navy on his 18th birthday, served in nearly every theater of World War II, and returned home to marry his childhood sweetheart and raise a family that gave him constant pleasure and pride.  He worked much of his life in the costume jewelry industry, including many years as general manager of Foster Jewelry Co., before retiring over 30 years ago.  He and his wife traveled after retirement, but his greatest pleasure remained the quiet enjoyment of his home and garden. He was a mainstay and a source of sage advice, strength, and courage for his large family his entire life; a role model of honesty, kindness, and honorable behavior.

Harold listened more than he spoke, and, when he did, liked to tell stories in which he was more often than not a large part of the joke.  He enjoyed reading, crosswords, his wife’s excellent cooking, the vicissitudes of the Red Sox, and the seeming certainties of the Patriots.  His prevailing manner was mild, making the occasional tale of youthful hardship and adventure all the more surprising.  Nonetheless, he never stopped marveling over his children’s and, later, his grandchildren’s travels and achievements.  He dispensed his love unconditionally, and, most of all, he adored and cherished his wife.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Graveside services were held Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. via Zoom.

When I read Mr. Webber’s obituary this morning I was taken by how exactly it reminded me of him…quiet yet resolute. As David was my first friend I spent a great deal of time at the Webber house. I remember Mr. Webber as very kind, hard working, and he truly loved his family. My heartfelt condolences to David, Jeffrey, their families, and especially to Mrs. Webber, my “second” mom.

    Lorraine, David, Jeffrey and Family,
Growing up next door, I have very fond memories of Harold. He was always out enjoying his garden and beautiful yard and had a big smile to share with his neighbors. Our heartfelt sympathy to you all.

It was probably about 1944 during WWII that Harold and Lorraine, who worked with my father, visited my parents in Warwick. I must have been about nine and Harold’s navy uniform made a big impression on my youthful curiosity. While I sat on his lap, he kindly answered all my questions while he also inquired about my own adventures. Childhood memories are few, so it must have been a special day that caused me to remember those events from so long ago.

While I saw Lorraine a few times afterward, it was not until about fifty years later before I again met the Webber’s through a mutual friend. Lorraine told me that she had worked with my father and I quickly recalled our wartime meeting. Harold confirmed that my recollections were correct.

In this small World, it is always sad to learn that such kind people as Harold have left. May their fond memories of him give comfort to his family and all those who had the good fortune to have known Harold.

Dear Webber Family: What can I say about Harold. A gentleman and wonderful person that I had the pleasure to work for. We had a special bond especially when I made him his Sunday Omlet which became a tradition that he looked forward to. Our talks at breakfast I will miss. He will always have a special place in my heart as Lorraine does as well. He is with the Angels now and his presence will still be here with us. God Bless you All
