Gardos, Jorge

Gardos, Jorge, 91, died Thursday, October 13, 2022 at home. He was the beloved husband of Donna (Robbins) Gardos for 30 years. Born in Budapest, Hungary, a son of the late Nandor and Ilona (Desser) Gardos, he had lived in Warwick for over 30 years, previously living in Caracas, Venezuela and New York City. Jorge was a Holocaust survivor of the Budapest Ghetto and escaped communist Hungary in 1956 during the Hungarian Revolution. A concert violinist, conductor and educator, he went on to perform throughout South America, the United States, and Europe, and remained deeply committed to teaching music until the end of his life.

Jorge was also a devoted father, grandfather and friend. He is survived by his daughter Catherine Gardos Reid, her husband Michael, and grandson Reuben of Minneapolis, MN, and his son Thomas Gardos, wife Elizabeth Zimmermann, and grandchildren Noah and Sophie of Barrington, RI.

Funeral services and Shiva will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to US Holocaust Memorial Museum, 100 Raoul Wallenberg Pl SW, Washington, DC 20024.

    Mr. Gardos was a wonderful teacher and an excellent friend. We learned from him how to appreciate classical music. It was our honor to know him.

    My deepest condolences to Mr. Gardos’s passing. As a young musician, Mr. Gardos’s love for music inspired me to find passion in music. He has left a beautiful mark on my soul which I will never forget. He truly was an inspiration.

    Jorge touched the lives of so many. He was determined to share his love for music to all who would open their hearts to it. He was not only an amazing musician, but a warm and patient teacher to both students and teachers alike. He was and still is such an inspiration and I feel so grateful to have known him.
