Samuel L. Torman

Torman, Samuel L., 80, died Saturday, April 12, 2014 at RI Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Lois Barbara (Weiss) Torman. They were married for 55 years. Born in Providence, a son of the late David and Lena (Bander) Torman, he had lived in Cranston for 51 years. Sam was the Insurance Commission for the State of RI for over 35 years, retiring in 1989.  He was a member of Temple Am David, South Providence Hebrew Free Loan Assoc. and the Southeastern New England Antique Dealer Assoc. Sam volunteered as a driver for “Kosher Meals On Wheels.”  Devoted father of Hal Torman and his wife, Tina, of Reading, MA, Bruce Torman and his wife, Elaine, of Cranston, and Roberta Torman of Mandeville, LA. Dear brother of the late Herman Torman and Evelyn Fine. Loving grandfather of Rachel, Susan, Emily, Jennifer, and Elena. Funeral services will be held Monday at 3:00 p.m. in SHALOM MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 1100 New London Ave., Cranston. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to Louis & Goldie Chester Full Plate Kosher Food Pantry, 100 Niantic Ave., Providence, RI 02907.     Dear Louis & Family:

    I’m very sorry to read of Sam’s passing. I worked with him for 13 years; he was the best ever as chief insurance examiner and as state insurance commissioner. He was liked and respected by his peers. He had a good sense of humor and it was a privilege to be associated with him. My sincere regrets.
