Florence Landes

DATELINE: WARWICK

Florence Landes, age 101, passed away at home Saturday, August 24, 2019. She was born in Providence, RI on October 4, 1917 the second of three daughters to the late Louis and Mollie Silverman, and lived in Warwick for the past 55 years.

The three sisters worked together as beauticians after high school; Florence went on to have her own beauty parlor. Later she and her sister Ruth opened a restaurant and continued on to work in the cafeteria at General Electric.

Florence moved to Sparrows Point II apartments when it opened in 1979. She was the last remaining charter tenant and was an active member of the residents association for many years. Florence was a remarkable cook and enjoyed preparing meals for her family and friends, most especially over the holidays. She made the best potato salad. Not a summer would go by without being asked to bring it for a cookout. She made the best French toast too. Just ask her grandsons. Florence also loved playing games with her neighbor friends each week, especially bingo and cards. She was a dedicated sports fan and enjoyed watching baseball games, especially the Red Sox.

Florence was the beloved mother of Jerald Landes and his wife, Laura, and Neil Landes and his wife, Nancy. Cherished Grandmother of Brent and his wife Stacey, and Adam. Loving Great Grandmother of Ean and Gregory. Dear sister of the late Anna Silverman and Ruth Bleau. Adored Aunt of Marlene, Louis and Stephen. Revered Great Aunt of Juna, Ari and Alyssa.

Graveside services will be held THURSDAY at 11:00 a.m. in Lincoln Park Cemetery, 1469 Post Road, Warwick. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Hospice: VNA of Care New England, 51 Health Lane, Warwick, RI 02886 or American Cancer Society, 931 Jefferson Blvd., #3004, Warwick, RI 02886.  Shiva will be observed at 15 Parkway Drive, Warwick on Thursday 7-9 p.m. and Friday 1-4 p.m.

Florence was a delightful, charming, remarkable woman. She impressed and inspired everyone who was lucky enough to meet her. She, and her famous apple crisp will be sadly missed, but her memory will live in the hearts of her family and friends. So glad Ean & Gregory were blessed to know and love their Bubbie Florence and that she was able to know and love them.

We would like to send our deepest condolences from the Witt family. My mom lived in Sparrow’s Point along with your lovely Mom. She always brought a positive light to everyone’s day with her wonderful smile, her compassionate personality, and her warm heart. She would play cards with the girls, and would often make extra potato latkes to share with her friends. She was such a wonderful person & she will be missed. I would have loved to honor your mom by coming to her services, but I am a teacher and we have already started school here in Massachusetts. But please know that she is in our prayers.
