Beverly Gomberg Sugerman

DATELINE: PROVIDENCE

Sugerman, Beverly (Gomberg), 92, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother of Providence, R.I. went on what she called her “next journey” on Sunday December 16, 2018.  A woman of grace, beauty, dignity, strength, and compassion, she was born on March 8, 1926 to Ruth Anna and Aaron Gomberg in Worcester, MA.  Beverly was the oldest of two daughters.  She lost her dear mother when she was nine years old and she missed her dearly her entire life.

She went to school in Worcester, MA and later moved with her father and sister, Joyce, to East Hartford, CT where she graduated from East Hartford High School.  She worked for the Office of Price Administration in Hartford.  She married the love of her life, Nathaniel (Nat) Sugerman on January 5, 1947 in Cranston, RI.  They were married for 44 years until he passed away in January 1991.  They were loving and devoted parents to their four children.  Bev worked alongside her husband Nat when he started the Beatrix Jewelry Company and was closely involved with Nat’s second business, the Providence Metallizing Company, Inc.  After their first child was born, she was a homemaker and volunteer for organizations, including the League of Women Voters.

Bev loved family above all else.  She and Nat opened their home to her Dad, Aaron, who lived with them and their four children until his death.  Family reunions and parties were always Bev’s joy to host.  Bev opened their house to nieces and nephews, and she was beloved by them all.  She was a wonderful cook and baker, making delicious cookies and treats.  Bev loved to play games with favorites being scrabble and card games, including solitaire and rummy.  She regularly would be the winner.  She was an avid sports fan of the Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots, Boston Bruins, college football and PGA golf.  She loved to play and watch tennis.  From the time she was a little girl, she was an avid reader.  She loved to do jigsaw puzzles and took up painting later in life.  Her framed art graces the walls of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren’s homes.

Bev was predeceased by her parents and her dear husband, Nathaniel Howard Sugerman.  She leaves her four loving and devoted children: Ruth Ann Sugerman of Riverside, RI; Claudia Akerstein of Boston, MA; Betty (Alan) Sugerman Weintraub of West Hartford, CT; and Richard Sugerman of Portsmouth, RI.  She leaves her grandchildren: Ari (Michelle) Akerstein; Ilana (Pablo) Calderon; Eli (partner Christine Hurley) Akerstein; Justin and Lia Weintraub; and Samantha and Nathan Sugerman.  Great-grandchildren Nick Akerstein and Saul, Lev, and Lua Akerstein.  She leaves her dear sister, Joyce Aaron; cousins, nieces, nephews, and extended family across the country.  She was predeceased by her daughter-in-law Amy Leiter Sugerman.

Bev’s beauty shone inside and out and her caring spirit, kind words and gestures were evident to all who knew her.  She loved the ten last years of her life living at Laurelmead in Providence, where she found a home and had many caring and devoted friends.

The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Laurelmead and Dr. Aman Nanda and Medical Assistant, Nikki for their care and compassion.  Special thanks to Claudia Duarte, Summer Smith, and Chrystal Cintron for their loving care during her final days. Memorial donations can be made to the Beverly Gomberg Sugerman and Nathaniel Sugerman Memorial Garden at Temple Beth-El, 70 Orchard Street, Providence, RI 02906.  Funeral services will be held on THURSDAY at 10:00 a.m. in Temple Beth-El.  Shiva will be observed at Laurelmead, 355 Blackstone Blvd, Providence on Thursday from 7-9 p.m.  Family will also sit shiva at the home of Betty and Alan Weintraub, 18 Sunny Reach Drive, West Hartford, CT on Sunday from 1-4 & 6:30-9 p.m.

We are saddened to hear of Bev’s death but celebrate her long and full life. She died as she lived, with quiet grace and dignity, surrounded by the family she adored, and probably in high heels.
With sincere condolences to the family, Phyllis (Bassing)and Larry Sager, Pottstown, Pennsylvania.

I wish to extend my sincere condolences on the passing of your mother, Beverly Gomberg Sugerman. I will always remember her as a very sweet woman. It was a pleasure to meet up with her every so often on the East Side over the past few years. She would always be dressed so beautiful, and she would tell me how her children and grandchildren were doing. She was very proud of her family.

How lucky you all were to have such a wonderful mother, grandmother and great grandmother. The obituary is a beautiful portrayal of all that she was: kind, smart, gracious…and the joyful heartbeat of every gathering. It’s never long enough, but how special it was for you to have had her in your lives. We remember her as a free spirit, with smiles and love, and send you our hope that your memories will ease your sorrows.
    Much love and shalom,
    Jan and Steve Schwartz

Please accept my condolences for the passing of Beverly. There is hope though, as the Almighty has arranged for the resurrection in the future. He promises, “… There is going to be a resurrection of both the righteous and the unrighteous.” (Acts 24:15)

I hope you find these few words comforting and provide motivation to prepare for the new world of God’s making. (John 17:3)
