Lois Elaine Lewis

DATELINE: Newport

Lewis, Lois Elaine, 78, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 8, 2015, after a life filled with family, friends and love.

Lois was born on April 5, 1937 in Providence, Rhode Island to Mary Beatrice (Lubin) and Leo Andelman. She was an incredibly bright student and graduated at the age of 16 from Hope High School in 1954.

Lois attended Boston University before she met the love of her life on the beach in Narragansett. William Lewis swept her off her feet and they married in 1955. The two then moved to Cranston, Rhode Island to start their life together.

Lois and Bill had three children: Debra, Michael and Steven. Lois worked as a receptionist at the Cranston Tennis Club and was an avid player herself. She was also a successful part-time fashion consultant for more than 15 years at Mel and Me in Garden City, and always dressed to the height of style.

Lois lived in Cranston for 30 years before she and her husband designed and built their dream home in Warwick. They also spent summers at their beautiful summer home, Bonniecrest, in Newport. When Lois and Bill retired, they spent their winters at their home in Naples, Florida, but always returned to Newport each summer to spend time with family.

Lois and Bill were partners in everything they did for their 60 years of marriage: traveling the world, going to the ballet and theater, golfing, and more. Lois always loved animals, including her Bichon Frisés, Sassy and Lily. She was a voracious reader and kept up with every new movie and TV show. She enjoyed baking, cooking, and entertaining friends and family. She was also very active in her community, serving on various committees and boards as well as fundraising for charitable organizations.

When Lois was diagnosed with cancer, doctors told her she only had a few years to live. But she proved them wrong for more than 13 years. She was always beautifully dressed with a smile on her face, even through the toughest times. Lois’ poise, strength and grace are an inspiration to everyone who knew her.

She is survived by her husband, William Lewis, her sister Marcia (Andelman) Halpern and her husband Robert of Naples, FL and Newport, RI, her children Debra Lewis Hogan and her husband Lawrence of Boxford, MA, Michael Lewis and his wife Brenda of East Greenwich, RI, and Steven Lewis and his wife Kathryn of East Greenwich, RI, as well as her five grandchildren, Cara, Elana, John, Rachel and Cory.

Funeral services will be held Sunday at 11:00 a.m. in TEMPLE SINAI, 30 Hagen Ave., Cranston. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, 450 Brookline Ave., Boston, MA 02215, Care Dimensions (Hospice), 75 Sylvan St., Suite B-102, Danvers, MA 01923 or your favorite charity. Due to Rosh Hashana, shiva will not be observed. Friends are invited to visit with the family on Sunday from 2-6 p.m. in Bonniecrest, 111 Harrison Ave., #A-11, Newport.

Lois was an inspiration to all of us – she will be greatly missed. She was a wonderful friend and helpful as my CoCaptain building the original Kensington Bridge Team. Always positive and beautiful, she will be remembered by her friends in Naples.
Talking to Lois before deciding to move to Kensington, was the best decision I could have made. She loved it here!
My very best wishes to all her loving family. My thoughts and prayers are with you all, particularly at this time.
    Fondly, MARY

Debra, I am honored to have known your mother . . . she was indeed a classy, brilliant woman who always was kind and gracious as well as beautifully put-together. I so enjoyed talking about books with her . . . she was the most avid reader I’ve ever known. When I saw her recently, I was so impressed with how wonderful she looked. How bravely she struggled with such a horrible disease. I am so sorry for your loss.

Lois was an extraordinary woman, with a marvelous personality. She had the ability to lift everyone’s spirits. Her positive energy was a force that kept her going until her last breath.
Lois and I had a loving, life long friendship starting when I moved to RI in May 1957.
Regardless of how long the interval, our conversations were as if we spoke yesterday. I will miss her dearly.

Your loving wife, mother and grandmother, was one of
the nicest people that I ever have had the pleasure of knowing and admiring these many years as her neighbor in Naples….not enough words to describe such an amazing woman.
Not only did she share her love, she would gladly pass on the name of a good book or a delicious recipe that her granddaughter had created. May God bless your family with the strength to carry on.
    My love and condolences, Freya
