DATELINE: New Bedford Portnoy, Dr. Bernard, 87, of Meriam St., died Wednesday, December 9, 2015, in Tufts Medical Center, Boston. He was the beloved husband of Susan (Schenker) Portnoy for 53 years. A lifelong New Bedford resident, he was a son of the late Israel and Leona (Dondis) Portnoy. Dr. Portnoy was a pediatrician at Pediatric Associates in New Bedford for 57 years, retiring this past September. He was the founder and an active volunteer of the New Bedford Free Clinic for Children. He was the doctor for the New Bedford School System and was the longest serving employee for the City of New Bedford. Dr. Portnoy was a member of the Bristol South Medical Society. They were married for 67 years. He was the beloved husband of Carolyn (Maziarz) Horowitz for 48 years. Born in Providence, a son of Irene (Garber) Horowitz of Providence and the late Jerome Horowitz, he had lived in Warwick for 35 years. Sidney was the owner of Sid’s Tool Co. in Warwick for 40 years. He was a U.S. Coast Guard veteran, serving stateside during the Viet Nam Conflict.
